Writerly Links

Here are some useful links. I will add to these as people pass them on to me, but will start with those that I have included in the posts to date, along with a couple of others:

PEAK BODIES

The following peak bodies also provide useful links to sites relevant to writers:

Australian Society of Authors ASA

"The Australian Society of Authors, the professional association for Australia's literary creators, was formed in 1963 to promote and protect the rights of Australia's authors and illustrators." (From the ASA website.)

 writingWA  writingwa

"As the peak body for writing and associated activities in WA, writingWA celebrates the achievements of our literary creators, provides a range of services to support emerging practitioners, and strives to bring West Australian writing to new audiences throughout this State and beyond." (From the writingwa website)

This site also lists a fairly comprehensive range of writing competitions and opportunities.

Asia Pacific Writers and Translaters Association

"The Asia Pacific Writers & Translators Association (AP Writers) is a not-for-profit, non-political association for authors and literary translators established to advance the careers of authors and literary translators, nurture the quality and diversity of literatures in the region, and promote our members’ work internationally." (From AP Writers website)

USA The Authors Guild

"The Authors Guild has been the published writer's advocate for effective copyright, fair contracts, and free expression since 1912." (From The Authors Guild website)

Canadian Authors Association

The Canadian Authors Association (CAA) is a national organization with a local presence dedicated to promoting a flourishing community of writers across Canada and to encourage works of literary and artistic merit." (From CAA Website.)

Pen International

"Since 1921, we have played an active part in promoting freedom of expression and literature around the world." (From Pen International Website)

Australian Literary Agents' Association

"The Australian Literary Agents’ Association was formed in 2003 in order to provide a public presence and a point of contact for Australian literary agencies and their staff."

Goodreads is not necessarily what you would call a peak body but has such a large and interactive readership that I have included it here.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN WRITING ASSOCIATIONS

Fellowship of Australian Writers, WA. FAWWA

" “A tradition of passion, integrity and intellectual ferment…” The Fellowship of Australian Writers WA, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing advocacy, training, support and friendship to Western Australia’s writing community." (From the website)

Katharine Susanah Pritchard Writers Centre KSP

"Encouraging writing related activities in the Perth Hills whilst preserving the heritage value of the former home of leading Australian writer, Katharine Susannah Prichard." (From the website)

Peter Cowan Writers Centre PCWC

"The Peter Cowan Writers' Centre (PCWC) is a friendly non-profit organisation which strives to be supportive of new writers, provide pleasure to those who write for fun, and to be an alternative for those who take creative writing seriously." (From the Website)

CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHORS WHO PROVIDE MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT AND MENTORING SERVICES

Chris McLeod

"Chris is the author of five critically acclaimed books and has a PhD in creative writing. He is a former fiction editor of Westerly, a prestigious literary journal produced at the University of Western Australia and has operated Wordwork Manuscripts since 2001." (From Wordwork website)

Chris provided manuscript assessment and mentoring assistance for my debut novel and I found his advice to be invaluable.

Tom Flood Flood Manuscripts

"Flood Manuscripts provides constructive commentary on your writing, its qualities, integrity and weaknesses in terms of craft and creativity, the assessors highlighting any issues the manuscript might have and drawing your attention to positive aspects of the work." (From Flood Manuscripts Website)

I found this to be another excellent manuscript assessment service

RECOMMENDED WRITERS' BLOGS

Emma Darwin has a great blog site with lots of good tips on the craft of writing

Tara Moss has some lively debates going on. Well worth checking out.

Margaret Atwood is coming to the Perth Writers Festival in 2013. A personal favourite of mine.

Angela Meyer Her blog Literary Minded has moved from Crikey and is now operating independently again. Getting active again, February 2013.

Natasha Lester Her excellent blogsite was mentioned on this site January 2013.

Louise Allan BLPG writer Louise Allen has just started a blog site. It promises to be something quite special.

Australian Women Writers Challenge  Reviews of books by contemporary female Australian writers.

POETRY

My favourite site for poetry is poetsonline
The site has a monthly poetry promp to which you can respond and send a poem to be considered for publication on line. Take a look. They have a great blog too.

SITES WHICH ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS AND PAY FOR THOSE PUBLISHED

Kill Your Darlings accepts submissions of original, previously unpublished work in March, June, September and December. Don't send submissions in any other month. The implication from reading the site is that they will not be considered.
They suggest you check out the site first for the kind of work they publish, and write that"Kill Your Darlings enjoys reading work that has a fresh, intelligent angle, is anecdotal yet informed, or is just a little bit cheeky."
